Weekend in Attapeu

The main covered market selling fresh produce, sticky rice, grilled meats, and local textiles. It's the social heart of town – you'll see everything from live frogs to handmade bro

Tip: Try the sai oua (Lao sausage) from the lady at the north end – she's been there 20 years. Best between 6 AM and 8 AM before the heat hits and the meat gets fly-blown.

A dirt path along the Xe Xou river near the market, with benches and shade trees. Good for an easy stroll to watch local fishermen and kids swimming after school.

Tip: Go at sunrise (around 5:30–6 AM) when the mist sits low over the water and the monks come down for alms. Much cooler and quieter than midday.

The main temple in town, originally built in the 19th century but heavily rebuilt. Has a large golden Buddha statue and a peaceful courtyard with frangipani trees. Few tourists ever come.

Tip: Check the small wooden building behind the main hall – it contains a rare collection of old Buddhist manuscripts on palm leaves. Ask the novice monk politely; he may show you around.

Tip: Combine with a visit to the UXO Lao Information Centre (free, 8–11 AM, 2–4 PM) on the same road. They have a model bomb and show a short documentary on unexploded ordnance clearance.

A modest but pretty waterfall about 3 km north of town on a dirt track – more a series of rocky cascades than a big drop. Locals picnic here on weekends. The pool is swimmable in the dry season.

Tip: Bring sandals – the rocks get slippery. Best visited after rain (May–October) when the flow is stronger. No entry fee, but a local family might ask for 5,000 kip (~20p) to park a scooter near their land.
