Things to Do in Attapeu

The main covered market selling fresh produce, sticky rice, grilled meats, and local textiles. It's the social heart of town – you'll see everything from live frogs to handmade brooms.

🕐 Daily 5:30 AM–noon

💡 Try the sai oua (Lao sausage) from the lady at the north end – she's been there 20 years. Best between 6 AM and 8 AM before the heat hits and the meat gets fly-blown.

A dirt path along the Xe Xou river near the market, with benches and shade trees. Good for an easy stroll to watch local fishermen and kids swimming after school.

💡 Go at sunrise (around 5:30–6 AM) when the mist sits low over the water and the monks come down for alms. Much cooler and quieter than midday.

A modest but pretty waterfall about 3 km north of town on a dirt track – more a series of rocky cascades than a big drop. Locals picnic here on weekends. The pool is swimmable in the dry season.

🕐 Dawn to dusk

💡 Bring sandals – the rocks get slippery. Best visited after rain (May–October) when the flow is stronger. No entry fee, but a local family might ask for 5,000 kip (~20p) to park a scooter near their land.

The main temple in town, originally built in the 19th century but heavily rebuilt. Has a large golden Buddha statue and a peaceful courtyard with frangipani trees. Few tourists ever come.

🕐 Daily 6 AM–6 PM

💡 Check the small wooden building behind the main hall – it contains a rare collection of old Buddhist manuscripts on palm leaves. Ask the novice monk politely; he may show you around.

A small concrete monument near the river marking where the Ho Chi Minh Trail passed through Attapeu province during the Vietnam War. Just a plaque and a faded map, but significant for war history buffs.

💡 Combine with a visit to the UXO Lao Information Centre (free, 8–11 AM, 2–4 PM) on the same road. They have a model bomb and show a short documentary on unexploded ordnance clearance.
