Things to Do in Sylhet

An old iron bridge over the Surma River, built in the 1930s. It's a local icon and a popular spot for evening walks with river views.

💡 Go just before sunset to see the lights come on over the water. Avoid peak hours (5–7pm) if you prefer fewer crowds and motorbikes.

The shrine of the revered Sufi saint Shah Jalal, a major pilgrimage site. The complex includes a mosque, pond, and peaceful courtyards.

💡 Dress modestly—cover your head and legs. Non-Muslims can enter the outer courtyard but not the inner shrine. Visit early morning to avoid heat and crowds.

A small museum dedicated to General M.A.G. Osmani, commander-in-chief of the Bangladesh Liberation War. Displays photographs, personal items, and wartime memorabilia.

The tomb of Shah Jalal's nephew, another Sufi saint. Set in a peaceful garden with a pond, it's less crowded than the main dargah and has a calm atmosphere.

💡 Combine with a visit to the nearby Lawachara National Park (small entry fee) for a day out. Bring a scarf—women need to cover heads inside. No photography inside the shrine.

A protected forest area about 30km east of the city, home to deer, monkeys, and many bird species. You can hike trails and spot wildlife from watchtowers.
