Things to Do in Situbondo

The main mosque of Situbondo, with a large white dome and twin minarets visible from the main road. The courtyard is open and peaceful.

💡 Non-Muslim visitors are welcome outside prayer times. Dress modestly – long sleeves and trousers/skirt required. No fee, but donations for upkeep are appreciated.

A bustling morning market where locals buy fresh produce, spices, fish and handicrafts. The narrow alleys are crowded but full of life – good for cheap snacks and people-watching.

🕐 4am–noon daily

💡 Go between 6am and 8am for the best selection and cooler air. Try the pisang goreng (fried banana) from the stall near the east gate – it costs about 2,000 IDR.

A long stretch of white sand beach with calm waters, lined with shady trees and basic warung food stalls. Locals come here to swim or relax on weekends.

🕐 6am–6pm daily

💡 Arrive before 9am on weekdays to have the beach nearly to yourself. Bring your own mat and sunblock – there’s little shade near the water.

A tiered waterfall in a forested ravine, about 15m high with a deep, swimmable pool at the base. The walk down takes 20 minutes on a steep path with wooden steps.

🕐 7am–5pm daily

💡 Go after a rainy day to see the waterfall at full flow. Entry is 5,000 IDR per person. Wear sturdy sandals – the path is slippery when wet. Bring insect repellent.

A small local museum housed in a former Dutch colonial building, with exhibits on Situbondo’s history, traditional costumes, and agricultural tools. Not exhaustive but gives a solid overview.

💡 Entrance fee is roughly 5,000 IDR (about 30p). The curator often gives a free guided tour if you ask nicely. Closed on Sundays.
