Weekend in Sainyabuli

Tip: Best at sunrise when mist lifts off the water; bring a small stool if you want to sit a while. No vendors, so take water. After heavy rain the path can be muddy.

A covered wet market running parallel to the main road. Stalls sell fresh produce, grilled meats, sticky rice, and local Lao household goods. No souvenirs, just real trade.

Tip: Go before 8am for the best selection of sticky rice and grilled fish. Bring small change – sellers rarely have change for large notes. Try the khao soi (noodle soup) from the women near the vegetable section.

The oldest temple in town, set back from the road in a shady compound. The main sim (ordination hall) has faded murals and a tall, gilded Buddha. The grounds are quiet and well kept.

Tip: Look for the small bell tower behind the hall – you can ring it for good luck. No entry fee, but a small donation to the temple fund (around 5,000 kip) is appreciated. Remove shoes before entering any building.

A large, whitewashed Buddhist stupa on a small hill just south of town. It's a local pilgrimage site and offers a clear view over Sainyabuli and the surrounding valley.

Tip: Go late afternoon when the light softens and the monks often come to sweep the platform. No need to cover shoulders unless you enter the small shrine building.

Tip: Elephants come to the river around 9am and again around 4pm – show up half an hour early for a good spot. It's a 5km cycle or 20,000 kip tuk-tuk ride from town. Bring binoculars; the best view is from the bamboo platform on the far bank.
