Deeper Into Polonnaruwa
Remains of the seven-storey royal palace, with thick brick walls and dozens of rooms clearly marked; the scale gives a sense of its former grandeur.

Getting Around Polonnaruwa
Book through PickMe or a hotel driver beforehand to avoid touts. The drive takes about 4 hours on the A1 then A6 highways; ask for a driver who knows the shortcut via Giritale to shave off 30 minutes.
Ac buses are pricier (700–900 LKR) but worth it for the AC and comfier seats. Get off at the Polonnaruwa New Town stop, then take a tuk-tuk (200 LKR) to Clay Hut Village—it's 3 km east of the town centre.
Negotiate a half-day round trip to the main ruins for 1200–1500 LKR. The Clay Hut Village staff can call a reliable driver. Avoid tuk-tuks after 5:30 PM near the ruins—they double rates.
Book a 1st-class reserved seat in advance at the station; unreserved is chaotic. The train passes through scenic jungle and tank country. From Polonnaruwa station, a tuk-tuk to Clay Hut Village costs 300 LKR (15 mins).
