Things to Do in Nampula

Colonial-era railway station built in the 1920s. Still operational. Elegant green and white facade, old steam locomotive on display outside. A quick photo stop.

💡 Go just before a scheduled departure (check at ticket office) to see the platform come alive. The building interior is unrestored but has beautiful original tiles.

Large covered market selling everything from fresh cassava and dried fish to cheap second-hand clothes. Loud, chaotic, and very local. Good for real street food.

💡 Try the grilled corn on the cob and fresh coconut from the ladies near the meat section. Come early (6am-9am) for the best fish. Watch your phone, keep bags zipped.

Large modern cathedral with twin towers and a wide plaza. Simple interior with stained glass. No entrance fee but donations accepted. Peaceful spot for a rest.

💡 Best visited for the 9am Sunday mass — the choir sings in Makua and Portuguese, and the congregation is welcoming. Otherwise, it’s completely quiet. Photographs allowed.

Sandy beach bay about 4km east of centre. Calm, shallow water and a few thatched barracas selling cold drinks and fresh seafood. Locals come on weekends.

💡 Take a chapa (minibus) from the main bus rank for 10 MZN. Weekdays are nearly empty. Bring your own snacks — restaurant options are limited. No swimming at high tide as currents pick up.

Small museum in the old Governor's Palace. Exhibits local Makua culture, traditional tools, masks and musical instruments. Two rooms only, but well worth 45 minutes.

💡 Entry is about 50 MZN (50p) — carry small notes. Visit weekday mornings to avoid crowds. The garden behind has a giant baobab.
