Weekend in Kastoria

A flat, paved path running the length of the lake shore. Start at the Platania beach area and head south. Good views of the Byzantine churches on the peninsula across the water.

Tip: Walk anti-clockwise around the lake at dawn (around 6:30-7am in summer) to catch local fishermen bringing in their nets near the Doltso district.

A preserved Ottoman-era neighbourhood of stone mansions overlooking the lake. Narrow cobbled lanes with wooden balconies, Byzantine churches, and small courtyards. No entry fees.

Tip: Start at the top of Agios Nikolaos street and zigzag down towards the lake. The best photo spot is at the junction where the lane opens onto the lake at the Ship of the Lake taverna.

Housed inside a restored 14th-century monastery (Monastery of the Panagia Mavriotissa). Displays over 500 Byzantine icons from local churches, plus liturgical objects. Small but well-curated.

Tip: The museum is free on the first Sunday of each month. Go early (9am) to avoid the packed tour groups from the lake cruise boats. Closed Mondays.

A natural cave overlooking the lake with a small fourth-century BC Macedonian rock-cut temple inside. Steps lead down from the road. The locals call it the cave of the dragon.

Tip: The steps are slippery after rain. Bring a torch to see the carved niches and a small altar near the entrance. Best before 10am to have the place to yourself.

An 11th-century monastery right on the lake shore. Frescoes from the late 13th century inside the main church, depicting scenes from the life of Christ. Small donation expected.

Tip: The donation is 2 euros (free on Saturdays before 1pm when the nuns open it for prayer). The garden behind the church has a hidden well with sweet water. Arrive before 11am to see the frescoes in good light.
