Things to Do in Kastamonu

A 16th-century mosque, library and madrasa complex with a serene courtyard and a historic fountain. The library holds Ottoman-era manuscripts.

💡 Visit the adjacent covered bazaar (Tarihi Kastamonu Çarşısı) afterwards — it's free to wander and good for local snacks.

A 19th-century arcade with arched stone walkways, filled with local shops selling copperware, textiles and handmade soaps. Good for photo-hunting.

💡 Head to the back right corner — a woman sells fresh simit (sesame rings) for 5 lira. Best breakfast snack in town.

A small museum housing artefacts from the Bronze Age, Hittite, Roman and Byzantine periods. Highlights include a Roman mosaic and sarcophagi.

A Byzantine fortress on a hilltop, offering panoramic views over the old city and surrounding mountains. The walk up is steep but short.

A protected forest with marked hiking trails, waterfalls and limestone caves. The closest entry point is a 10-minute minibus ride from the centre.

💡 Take the trail to Ilıca Waterfall (about 1.5 hours walk). Bring water and insect repellent — the forest is dense and humid.
