Things to Do in Herne

A 19th-century neo-Gothic Catholic church with a tall spire. Free to enter. Quiet inside, good for a break. Stained-glass windows show scenes from Herne's industrial past.

💡 Go during the Tuesday lunchtime organ recital (12:15–12:45). Free, no booking. The organist often plays Bach.

A not-for-profit exhibition space showing contemporary art, often local and emerging. Rotates shows every two months. Small gallery, no café.

💡 Check their website before you go – some installations are interactive and best seen when the artist is present, usually at the opening.

A reclaimed industrial site turned green space. Has a skatepark, basketball courts, and a long promenade along the old railway line. Quiet on weekdays.

💡 The southern end has a community garden with free herbs – pick a few leaves, but leave the flowers. Best for jogging or cycling.

Sprawling grounds around a medieval moated castle. Good for a walk or picnic. Castle interior costs entry, but the park is free. Duck pond, ancient trees.

💡 The ice-cream kiosk near the east gate does handmade cones – cheaper than the café by the castle. Open April to October only.

A former coal mine with a preserved winding tower and engine house. Free to walk the outdoor site; indoor exhibition costs a few euros. Steam locomotive on display.
