Things to Do in Angra Do Heroísmo

The main cathedral, rebuilt after the 1980 earthquake, with a simple limestone interior. The side chapels hold Baroque altarpieces and a notable 16th-century font.

💡 Free to enter, but bring a 1€ coin for the donation box to light the side altars – the gilded woodwork is worth seeing up close.

A volcanic peninsula that forms a natural harbour. Walk the ramparts of the 16th-century Fort of São João Baptista, with open views across the city and ocean.

💡 The full circuit of the fort walls takes about 90 minutes. Go in the late afternoon for cooler light and fewer crowds.

A short uphill walk from the centre leads to this lookout point on a tuff cone. Panorama of the whole bay, Monte Brasil, and on clear days, the island of São Jorge.
