Day 2

Deeper Into Wonosobo

Morning
Air Terjun Curug Bengkawah Waterfall

A multi-tiered waterfall dropping into a natural pool, surrounded by dense forest. The trail to the base is a 15-minute walk through farmland and bamboo groves.

🕐 07:00-17:00

💡 No entry fee, but you’ll pay 2,000-5,000 IDR at the village parking lot. Wear sandals that can get wet – the rocks are slippery. Best visited after a dry spell when the water is clear.

Midday
Dieng Plateau Complex

A highland archaeological site featuring a cluster of 8th-century Hindu temples (Candi Arjuna complex) and active sulphur craters like Kawah Sikidang. The landscape is stark and otherworldly.

🕐 07:00-17:00

💡 The temples themselves are free to walk around. Only pay if you want to enter the main Kawah Sikidang crater area. Bring a scarf – sulphur fumes can be strong, and it protects your face.

Afternoon
Sikunir Hill

A popular sunrise viewpoint overlooking Mount Sindoro and Sumbing. The golden light at dawn gives the hill its name.

🕐 Open 24 hours

💡 Start walking by 4am from the Dieng plateau car park to catch the sunrise. Bring a torch and warm jacket.

Late afternoon
Dieng Plateau Arjuna Temple Complex

A cluster of small 7th-century Hindu temples set in a cool highland plain. A few hundred metres from the main road.

🕐 07:00-17:00

💡 Visit early morning to avoid crowds and see the temples in soft light. Entry is 10,000 IDR (less than £0.50).

Final Favourites & Departure

Morning
Museum Dieng

Small museum with prehistoric fossils, volcanic rock samples, and traditional Dieng costumes. Informative for understanding the area's geology.

💡 Entry is 5,000 IDR. The museum is modest — 15 minutes is enough unless you read every sign.

Midday
Kawah Sikidang Crater

An active volcanic crater with bubbling mud pools and strong sulphur smell. Easy walk on wooden boardwalks.

💡 Keep to the marked path — the ground is thin in places. Entrance is 15,000 IDR. Go in the morning before the sulphur haze builds.

Getting Around Wonosobo

Damri Airport Bus + Local Bus KARTANEGARA From IDR 100,000 180 min

Take Damri from YIA to Giwangan Terminal (IDR 50,000), then board a ‘KARTANEGARA’ bus to Wonosobo (IDR 50,000). Get off at Wonosobo Terminal, then take a 10-minute ojek (motorbike taxi, IDR 15,000) to Kurnia Homestay on Jalan Garuda. Cheapest option but needs at least 3 hours total.

Shuttle Travel (door-to-door minibus) From IDR 200,000 150 min

Faster than public bus and drops you right at the homestay lobby. Companies like 'TransWonosobo' or 'Winosari Travel' run this route. Very reliable for solo travellers—no extra ojek needed.

Airport Taxi from Yogyakarta (YIA) From IDR 450,000 150 min

Pre-book via the hotel or a local driver—rates are fixed and safer than hailing at arrivals. The road climbs through Dieng Plateau, so confirm the car has good AC.

Local Angkot (shared minibus) From IDR 5,000 15 min

Angkots are yellow with a red stripe—route A or D passes near the hotel. Flag one down anywhere along Jalan Dieng. Carry small change; drivers rarely break large notes.

Intercity Bus from Yogyakarta (Terminal Giwangan) From IDR 50,000 180 min

Catch a 'Patas' AC bus for a bit more comfort—they have fewer stops. Tell the driver you're getting off at Wonosobo, not just passing through, or you'll end up at the ring road.

Local Bus KARTANEGARA (from Yogyakarta city centre) From IDR 50,000 180 min

Sit on the left side for views of rice terraces and Mount Sindoro. Don't trust drivers who say 'expedition'—they'll overcharge. Ask for 'bus biasa' (standard bus). Once at Wonosobo Terminal, ojek drivers know Kurnia Homestay by name.
