Things to Do in Whitley Bay

The restored Edwardian seaside entertainment complex, originally opened in 1910. The main dome and foyer are free to enter and house a small exhibition on the building's history. There are also free public art displays and a café inside.

💡 Pop in on a weekday morning when it's quiet — the staff are happy to chat about the history and show you things not on display during busy weekends.

A permanent public art installation inside the Metro station featuring ceramic panels and murals by local artists, depicting seaside life and the area's history. Also free to view from the platform without a ticket.

💡 Stand on the southbound platform for the best view of the largest mural. If you're not travelling, ask the ticket office if you can walk through to see it — they usually let you.

A long stretch of golden sand backed by the traditional promenade, with views of St Mary's Lighthouse in the distance. Good for walks, paddling, or just sitting and watching the tide.

💡 Arrive an hour before sunset on a clear weekday — the beach is emptier then, and you get the best light for photos of the lighthouse.

A small tidal island accessible via a causeway, with a Victorian lighthouse built in 1898. The lighthouse itself has free entry on certain days, but the island and causeway are always free. Excellent rock pools at low tide.

💡 Check tide times before you go — the causeway is only passable for about two hours either side of low tide. Tide tables are posted at the entrance or online.

A large public park and recreation area just behind the seafront, with open grassland, a children's play area, and paths for walking or cycling. Overlooks the sea and the Spanish City dome.

💡 The football pitches at the eastern end have a great view of St Mary's Lighthouse if you're after a quiet spot for a picnic away from the beach crowds.
