Working fishing pier where boats unload the morning catch. The adjacent fish market sells fresh tuna, mackerel and crabs. Can get crowded and slippery underfoot.

💡 Go around 6.30am to see the auction and catch the best selection. Bring cash if you want to buy – vendors don't take cards. Photograph from a distance unless you buy something.

A small, active Buddhist temple on a hill overlooking the bay. Contains a modern seated Buddha statue and some colourful murals. Locals come to pray and offer flowers.

🕐 Daily 6am–6pm

💡 Take the lane behind the Cargills supermarket and follow the road up. Respect dress code (cover shoulders and knees). No shoes inside the prayer hall. Quietest around 10am.

The main beach stretch running along the town. Good for swimming, and for watching the stilt fishermen who often pose for photos (tip them a few hundred rupees if you take pictures).

💡 Walk east past the fishing boats towards the point for quieter water and fewer touts. Most action is near the main road junction. Best early morning before 9am.

A public spot on the eastern end of Weligama Bay, offering a clear view of Taprobane Island – the private island with a villa once owned by French count. You can't visit the island.

💡 Best at low tide when the sand bar extends out – but don't try to walk across as the current is strong. The surf here can be rough, so just watch from shore. Sunset views are excellent.

A small museum housed in a restored Dutch-era building near the lagoon. Exhibits focus on maritime history, traditional fishing techniques and shipwreck artefac

💡 Entrance is about 100 LKR (less than 50p). The building itself is worth a look – original wooden beams and thick coral-stone walls. Allow 30 minutes max. Closed on public holidays.
