Things to Do in Wadduwa

A long stretch of golden sand with calm waters, ideal for swimming and sunbathing. Less crowded than Hikkaduwa, with swaying palm trees and a few beachside shacks.

A small colonial-era station building with a platform where you can catch the coastal railway. Trains run between Colombo and Matara every 20-30 minutes.

🕐 Tickets sold 6am to 9pm. Platform accessible anytime.

💡 Buy a second-class ticket to Aluthgama (about 30 LKR) for a short scenic ride past lagoons and villages. The train arrives without warning so stand behind the yellow line.

A peaceful Buddhist temple complex with a large seated Buddha statue, colourful murals and a meditation hall. Donation-based entry, but no mandatory fee.

💡 Go during a full moon poya day to see locals offering flowers and lighting oil lamps. Dress modestly covering shoulders and knees.

A sacred bo tree over 2,000 years old, believed to be a sapling from the original tree in Anuradhapura. Set in an open courtyard near the Kalutara river. Free to walk around, but respectful behaviour expected.

💡 Visit late afternoon just before sunset. The light through the tree's leaves is striking, and you might catch a local Puja ceremony with chanting.

An abandoned but partially restored colonial mansion built in 1910 by a local aristocrat. Set in sprawling grounds with a pond and old trees. Entry is 500 LKR for adults.

💡 Take a local tuktuk from Wadduwa centre (around 400 LKR one-way). Avoid midday heat—the interior has no fans. The guard gives a short, free tour if you ask nicely.
