Things to Do in Van

Paved walkway along the lakefront starting near the city centre. Benches, trees and a view of the lake and mountains. Popular for evening strolls.

💡 Best at sunset for the light on the water. Local tea sellers park carts nearby – a glass of çay costs 5 TL.

Massive Urartian fortress on a dramatic rock outcrop overlooking the lake. Climb free paths among ancient walls and inscriptions.

💡 Go at sunrise for fewer crowds and a good view of the citadel and Mount Suphan. The museum inside costs a few lira, but the fortress exterior is free.

Overgrown remains of a former Armenian settlement with crumbling churches and stone houses. Peaceful and quiet, no tickets or guides.

💡 Wear sturdy shoes – the paths are rough and some walls are unstable. Bring insect repellent in summer. Go early for the best light.

10th-century Armenian cathedral on tiny Akdamar Island, reachable by short ferry. Stone reliefs of animals and saints wrap the exterior.

🕐 Ferry runs 08:00–18:00 daily in summer, shorter in winter

💡 The ferry costs about 20 TL each way (2024). Go early morning to avoid midday heat and tourist groups. No food on the island – bring water and snacks.

Small but excellent museum next to Van Castle, displaying Urartian artefacts, pottery, and the famous bronze belt. Free entry since 2023 for everyone.

💡 Check the back garden for stone carvings and Hittite-style reliefs. Combine with the castle visit. Closed Mondays.
