Weekend in Unterseen

A flat, paved walkway along the Aare river with views of the Jungfrau massif and the Weissenau nature reserve. Benches and shaded spots make it a cheap picnic option.

Tip: Start at the Schiffländte pier and head east for the best mountain panorama. Bring binoculars — herons and kingfishers are common in summer.

A 15th-century Protestant church with Gothic vaulted ceilings, original fresco fragments, and a carillon that plays twice daily. Entry is free, though donations welcome.

Tip: Check the carved wooden pulpit from 1597. The carillon rings at 11am and 5pm — best heard from the churchyard bench.

The remaining corner tower of Unterseen’s medieval fortifications, with a spiral staircase to a small viewing platform. Offers a 360-degree view over rooftops and the river.

Tip: Climb at sunset for unobstructed light over the Alps to the south. The tower door is sometimes locked — ask at the tourist office for the key if closed.

A floodplain forest and wetland reserve on the Aare river’s east bank. Trails go through reeds and meadows, with bird hides and an old castle ruin at the entrance.

Tip: Late April to early May, wild garlic carpets the forest floor. Take a bag — locals forage for pesto-making. No entry fee, but parking costs 5 CHF.

A preserved medieval quarter with narrow lanes, wooden bridges over the Aare river, and 15th-century houses. The central square, Marktplatz, has a 16th-century town hall and fountain.

Tip: Walk down Obere Gasse early morning to catch sunlight hitting the timber-framed facades. No crowds until 10am.
