Day 2

Deeper Into Trivandrum

Morning
Shankumugham Beach

Quiet city beach with a long stretch of dark sand and a giant mermaid sculpture. Less crowded than Kovalam, more local.

🕐 Always open

💡 Visit on a Friday or Saturday evening when the food stalls open near the car park. Good for sunset walks.

Midday
Kovalam Beach

A crescent-shaped beach about 15 km south of the city, famous for its red cliffs and calm waters. Three main coves: Lighthouse, Hawah and Samudra. Better for swimming than surfing.

🕐 Open 24 hours

💡 Go to Lighthouse Beach for the sunset, but avoid the trinket sellers who swarm at dusk. Carry your own water – prices on the beach are inflated.

Afternoon
Kuthiramalika (Puthenmalika) Palace Museum

Travancore royal palace made of teak and rosewood, with carved horse arches. Entry fee is about 50 rupees.

🕐 8.30am-12.30pm, then 3pm-5.30pm, closed Sundays

💡 Buy a combination ticket with the adjacent Sri Padmanabhaswamy Temple museum if you plan to see both. No photography inside.

Late afternoon
Museum of Kerala History

A small but well-curated museum tracing Kerala's history from prehistoric times to British colonial rule through dioramas and artefacts. Entry is ₹30 for adults.

🕐 10:00 AM - 5:30 PM, closed Mondays

💡 The sound-and-light show in the neighbouring gallery is free and worth 20 minutes. Check the schedule at the counter – usually runs at 11 AM and 3 PM.

Getting Around Trivandrum

Kerala Local Train (Kovalam Beach route via Dhanuvachapuram) From ₹10 30 min

Useful if you're already near Central Station. Alight at 'Kovalam' halt—it's a 15-minute walk to the hotel. Trains are crowded during peak hours. Check schedules on the IRCTC app; they're unreliable for timings.

Trivandrum Suburban Railway (to Kazhakootam Station) From ₹10 25 min

Only useful if you're near Central Station. Trains are locals – no AC, often crowded at peak hours. From Kazhakootam station, an auto to Hilton costs ₹50-60. Check the 'ERail' app for exact departure times as schedules shift daily.

Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) Bus From ₹15 40 min

Board bus number 71, 81 or any 'Kazhakootam' route from platform 1. Sit on the left side for sea glimpses as you pass Kovalam turnoff. You'll need exact change.

KSRTC Bus (Route 51/51A/51B) From ₹20 45 min

From the airport, take a taxi (₹100) to Thampanoor first—no direct bus from the airport. Buses to Kovalam run along NH66; sit on the left side for sea glimpses. Get off at 'Kovalam Junction' stop, then take an auto (₹50) to the hotel.

Trivandrum City Bus (Red/White AC Buses) From ₹30 35 min

These AC buses are comfortable but stop frequently at every junction. The 'FM buses' have overhead screens but skip announcements – tell the conductor your stop. Get a prepaid card for 10 rides to save ₹5 per trip.

Uber/Ola/Rickey Cabs From ₹350 20 min

Pre-book with Uber or Ola from the airport arrivals hall – the official prepaid taxi counter outside costs double. Avoid app drivers who demand extra for luggage; report them.
