Things to Do in Torre Annunziata

A small, quiet museum in the Palazzo Criscuolo showing artefacts from the Oplontis digs and local finds. Free entry, no crowds, and well-labelled displays in Italian and English.

💡 Check the opening hours online before going; it has irregular closures. The ground floor has a free booklet with a map of all Roman sites in town.

A shady square with benches, a fountain, and a view of Vesuvius on clear days. Local men play cards here, kids kick footballs. No frills, but a genuine slice of daily life.

💡 Buy a slice of pizza from the bakery on the corner (via C. Colombo) and eat it here. The fountain water is safe to drink.

A working-class beach with dark volcanic sand, fishing boats, and a concrete promenade. No entrance fee, bring your own towel. The water is clean but the shore is pebbly at points.

💡 The best swimming spot is near the old pier at the southern end. Avoid Sundays when it gets packed. Pastry shop at via Vesuvio 45 sells excellent zeppole for €1.50.

A vast, free basilica with an ornate interior and the famous painting of the Virgin. The adjacent museum is included at no cost. It's a ten-minute walk from the train station.

💡 Visit during a weekday Mass to hear the organ played properly. The small cafe behind the sacristy has espresso for €1.

An exceptionally preserved Roman villa buried by Vesuvius in 79 AD. Frescoes and gardens give a real sense of ancient luxury. Entry is €5.50, not free but cheaper than Pompeii.
