Weekend in Tomohon

The main market in town, selling everything from fruit and spices to live pigs and dogs (known as 'extreme market' section). It's raw, chaotic, and genuine North Sulawesi life.

Tip: Go before 8am for the best action, and wear closed-toe shoes—the ground gets muddy. The 'extreme market' (pasar ekstrem) is behind the main produce hall; you can smell it before you see it.

A simple roadside platform offering clear views of Mount Lokon's crater, one of the most active volcanoes in Sulawesi. Smoke often rises from the vent. No facilities—just the view.

Tip: Best at sunrise around 5:30am when the mountain is cloud-free. Check Volcanology Centre status online first—if level 2 alert is active, the viewpoint may be closed. Bring your own water; nothing is sold there.

Tip: Bring a sarong if you want to enter any of the buildings; the walk up is about 500m of steep steps. Best light for photos is late afternoon. No entrance fee, but a small donation (5,000 IDR) to the caretaker is expected.

A three-coloured volcanic crater lake that shifts green, yellow, or blue depending on the light and mineral content. Small warungs (food stalls) line the shore.

Tip: Entry is 10,000 IDR (about 50p). The colour changes quickest after rain. Order a fried banana and coffee at Warung Ibu Lanny for the best view. Skip the overpriced boat rides.
