Deeper Into Takayama
A 5.7km walking trail that passes over 20 temples, shrines and a small cemetery with mountain views. It starts at the Kusakabe Folk Museum and ends at the Shiroyama Park.

💡 The full walk takes about 2 hours. Start from the Sakurayama Hachimangu Shrine end for a slightly downhill route. The temple gardens are free to enter and peaceful.
A former government outpost from the Edo period, and the only one of its kind still standing in Japan. You can see tatami mat rooms, a courtroom, granaries and treasure houses.

💡 The entry fee is ¥440 for adults. Visit on a weekday to avoid queues. The English audio guide costs ¥500 but adds significant detail to the exhibits.

Getting Around Takayama
Unnecessary for those light on luggage – the walk is 5–7 min flat. But if you have heavy bags or rain, it's cheap. Lock your hotel door quickly – ryokans expect shoes off at entry.
One-day pass costs ¥300 and covers unlimited rides on all 3 colour routes. The green line stops closest to Ryokan Asunaro. Buy pass at the bus terminal or coin locker near the information desk.
Cheapest direct transfer from the airport but takes nearly 4.5 hours. Pre-book online via Meitetsu Bus – seats fill up. The bus is comfortable with a toilet; bring snacks.
Sit on the left side heading north for best river and mountain views. Buy a JR Pass if doing other trips – this leg alone costs ¥8,890. Book reserved seats online in advance for busy seasons.
