Day 2

Deeper Into St. Gallen

Morning
Drei Weieren

A cluster of three small lakes in woodland uphill from the city, originally built to supply water to textile mills. Now a local swimming spot with views over St. Gallen.

🕐 Open 24 hours

💡 Take the Mühleggbahn funicular from town to save the steep walk; the middle lake has a grassy sunbathing area, the lower one a wooden jetty.

Midday
Abbey of Saint Gall Library

Unesco-listed library inside the abbey complex, housing medieval manuscripts and century-old books. The rococo hall alone is worth the modest entry fee.

🕐 Mon-Sun 10:00-17:00

💡 Buy a combined ticket with the Abbey Cathedral for a discount; avoid lunchtime crowds by arriving right at 10am opening.

Getting Around St. Gallen

Oberwaid Transfer From CHF 250 50 min

Book through the hotel concierge for a set rate. Avoid flagging down taxis at Zurich airport—they charge a surcharge for the St. Gallen run.

St. Gallen Bus 1 From CHF 3.50 15 min

Buy a day pass (CHF 7) if you plan to explore the city. Bus 1 runs along the main train line—get off at the stop directly opposite the hotel gate.

St. Gallen Trogenerbahn From CHF 3.50 12 min

This is actually a tram-train hybrid. It's slightly faster than the bus and offers decent views of the hills. Validate your ticket before boarding—fines are steep.

Zürich Airport Train From CHF 35 60 min

Buy a 'Super Saver' ticket online in advance; it can halve the price. The SBB app works well for live departures.
