💡 Free toilets nearby inside the municipal building. Bring a picnic from the medina bread market—it's a rare calm spot in a busy city.

Deeper Into Sfax

Morning
Bab El Kasbah

The southern gate of the medina, a massive arched double portal from the 14th century. It's still a bustling entry point, not a sanitised tourist spot.

🕐 Open 24 hours

💡 Stand under the arch at around 5pm when locals stream through. There's a free public garden just outside on the left, good for a shady sit.

Midday
Medina of Sfax

One of the best-preserved medinas in Tunisia, with 9th-century walls, Bab Diwan gate, and narrow souks selling local crafts and spices.

🕐 Open 24 hours; shops typically 8am–6pm, closed Friday afternoons

💡 Visit early morning (around 8am) to watch the bread market come alive. Try a cheap mint tea at a rooftop café near Bab El Kasbah for the view.

Getting Around Sfax

Sfax City Bus (Line 1 or 2) From 0.60 TND 10 min

Buses are crowded and don't run late. Buy a rechargeable 'Carte Sfax' from the station kiosk – paper tickets are still sold but exact change is essential.

Sfax Metro (light rail) From 0.80 TND 12 min

The metro is the quickest way across town. Validate your ticket at the platform machine – inspectors fine on the spot. Avoid the 08:00 and 17:00 rush.

Louage (shared taxi) to Sfax Centre From 1 TND 15 min

Louages run fixed routes – say 'Bab El Fath' to find the right queue. They're faster than buses but wait until the vehicle is full. Not great for luggage.

Sfax–Thyna Airport Taxi From 15 TND 20 min

Fix the fare before you get in; official white taxis have a meter but drivers often quote a flat rate. 15–20 TND is fair to central Sfax.
