Deeper Into Sambava

Morning
Marché de Sambava

The main market in town centre, selling fresh vanilla, spices, fruit, cloth, and everyday goods. A chaotic, authentic slice of local life.

🕐 06:00–17:00 daily

💡 Bring small change; vendors rarely break large notes. Vanilla is cheaper here than anywhere else in the region – check quality by the pods' oiliness.

Midday
Parc National de Masoala (Sambava office)

The local park office provides maps and permits for hikes into the Masoala rainforest. Cheap guided day walks can be arranged here (about 10,000–15,000 Ariary per person).

🕐 07:00–16:00 Monday–Friday

💡 Ask for the short 'Lemur Trail' walk (3 hours) if you're short on time – it's the best chance to see red-ruffed lemurs and chameleons. Pay in cash at the office.

Getting Around Sambava

Taxi-Brousse to Antalaha (via Roana) From 1,000 Ariary 5 min

This is the cheapest option, but the bus runs past the hotel junction, not to the door. Walk 10 mins down the dirt track. Buses are often packed — you might stand if it's full. Carry small change.

Private Taxi (rented) From 15,000 Ariary 10 min

Best to hire one through the hotel reception or a local guide. Most private taxis are old sedans or 4WDs — check the tyres and agree on a return time if you need it later. Bargain hard.

Local Taxi-Brousse (shared) From 2,000 Ariary per person 10 min

These are shared minibuses or 4WDs. Wave one down on the main road near the market — ask for 'plage' (beach). They'll drop you within 100m of the hotel. Don't expect a meter; agree on the price first.

Roana Hotel Airport Transfer From 20,000 Ariary 20 min

The hotel arranges this transfer — ask when booking. The driver will meet you just outside the small terminal. Cash only; no marked taxis at the airport.
