Things to Do in Samarinda

A compact city park in the old town area with a giant crocodile statue, fountains, and shaded benches. Popular for evening strolls and people-watching.

💡 Visit on a Sunday morning when local musicians often busk near the fountain. Avoid midday heat; shade is limited.

A paved walkway along the Mahakam River stretching about 2km from the Islamic Centre to the Mahakam Bridge. Watch river traffic and floating markets. Benches and basic shelters along the route.

💡 Go early morning (6-7am) to see the floating fruit sellers. Bring water and sun protection; no shade for long stretches.

The main traditional market selling fresh produce, spices, textiles, and local snacks. No entry fee, but bring small change for snacks or drinks.

💡 Try the pisang goreng (fried banana) from the stall near the main entrance. Arrive by 7am to see the market at its most active. Watch for uneven floors and wet patches.

A massive blue-domed mosque on the Mahakam River. The complex includes a minaret with panoramic views, a library, and landscaped gardens. No entry fee, but donations are welcome.

💡 Go at sunset for the view from the minaret. Wear a headscarf and long sleeves; modest clothing is required. Bring ID for the elevator to the top.

A small museum in a colonial-era building housing Dayak artefacts, royal regalia, and historical photos of the Kutai Sultanate. Free entry with donation box.
