Things to Do in Ruyigi

A colonial-era mission complex with a modest stone church built in the 1930s. The grounds are quiet and shaded, with a small cemetery of early missionaries. The church interior has simple stained glass.

The main market at the heart of town. A lively, no-frills place where locals sell produce, cloth, and household goods. You can buy fresh fruits for pennies.

A gentle hill east of town offering clear views of the surrounding valleys and the distant Kibira Forest. A common afternoon walk for locals.

A small, seasonal lake south of Ruyigi. During the wet season (November–April), it fills and attracts waterbirds—herons, stilts, and sometimes flamingos in transit. Dry season, it's a green basin with grazing cattle.

💡 Visit in March or April for the best birdlife. Walk or bike via the dirt track from Gisuru village. No facilities—take water and snacks.

A public access point along the Ruvubu River on the northern edge of the park. You get wide views of the river and forest without paying the park entrance fee. Best for birdwatching and quiet picnics.
