Weekend in Ribeirao Preto

Historic theatre built in the 1950s, with art deco architecture and a foyer exhibition space. Many free or low-cost cultural events, from classical concerts to local theatre.

Tip: Check the Facebook page for free matinee performances – they often have student orchestras or dance recitals on weekday afternoons. No booking needed, just turn up early.

The main central square, surrounded by historic buildings like the Catedral Metropolitana and the old Mercado. Benches, trees, and a central fountain – good for people-watching.

Tip: Sunday mornings there's a small craft fair with handmade soaps and local sweets. Grab a caldo de cana (sugarcane juice) from the stall on the north side for 3 reais.

A small museum inside a restored coffee warehouse, with exhibits on the region's coffee history from the 19th century. Includes old machinery and photo displays.

Tip: Free entry on Sundays. The guided tour is short but worth it for the explanation of how coffee grading works. Combine with a walk around the nearby Mercadão.

A large public park with native forest trails, a lake, playgrounds, and a small zoo with regional animals. Good for a quiet walk or picnic.

Tip: Go early on weekday mornings to avoid crowds and spot capybaras near the lake. The zoo closes for lunch between 12 and 2pm.

A state conservation area 25km out of town, home to one of Brazil's largest remaining cerrado (savanna) fragments. Has over 400 native plant species and trails through ancient forest.

Tip: Entry is free but you need to register at the visitor centre on arrival for a trail map. The 'Trilha do Pequi' loop is 3km and takes about 1.5 hours – wear proper shoes and bring water, as there's no shop on site.
