Things to Do in Ribe

Collection of Danish golden-age and modern art housed in a historic building. Highlights include works by Eckersberg and a sculpture garden. Entry is free on Wednesdays.

💡 Go on Wednesday for free entry, but arrive before 14:00 to avoid a queue. The café serves good coffee and cake.

Living history museum with reconstructed Viking houses, craft demonstrations, and animals. It is a 20-minute walk from the centre. Low-cost entry (about 100 DKK for adults).

💡 Skip the summer crowds and go in late August when re-enactors are still active but the site is quiet. Bring cash—the small café doesn't take cards.

Denmark's oldest cathedral, built from red brick with a distinctive tower. The interior is spare but striking, with medieval frescoes and a modern stained-glass window. Entry is free for the nave.

💡 Climb the tower for a panoramic view over the town. Cost is 30 DKK and worth it. Note the painted clock face—locals call it 'the silly clock'.

Wander the cobbled streets around the cathedral and market square. Half-timbered houses from the 1500s line the streets. The square hosts a weekly market on Saturdays.

💡 Head to the corner of Skibbrogade and Torvet for the best photo spot at 17:00 when the light hits the cathedral. The market sells local honey and rye bread.

Small but excellent museum tracing Ribe's Viking roots. Displays original artefacts, a reconstructed longship, and a timeline from 700 AD. Entry is cheap, and kids under 18 go free.
