Puerto Cabezas 3-Day Itinerary

Main public beach along the seafront with dark sand and views of the Caribbean. Locals fish nearby and there’s a relaxed, slightly rough edge to the area.

💡 Go early morning before 7am to avoid the heat and watch fishermen bring in their catch. Afternoon sun is brutal with no shade.

Central Catholic church with a simple wooden interior and notable carved altar. The building dates from the early 20th century, rebuilt after Hurricane Felix.

💡 Check weekday evenings around 5pm for short choir practices — the harmonies in Miskito are worth hearing.

Busy covered market selling fresh fish, fruit, vegetables and local crafts. The fish section has the day's catch direct from the coast — often lobster and snapper.

💡 Bring small bills. The best deals on fruit come around 9am after the river boats arrive. Try the coconut bread from the stall near the south entrance.

Small museum documenting the Miskito, Mayangna and Creole cultures of the region. Displays include traditional tools, ceremonial masks and historical photos.

💡 Ask the caretaker to unlock the back room — it holds older artefacts not labelled in English. Donations of about 20 cordobas appreciated.

Reclaimed waterfront walkway with benches, a children's play area and views over the lagoon. Not fully paved in all sections but popular for evening strolls.

💡 Best visited at sunset when the light hits the lagoon and the breeze picks up. Street food vendors appear around 5:30pm — try the fried plantain chips.
