Day 1

Arrive & Explore the Highlights

Morning
Nouadhibou Central Market

The city's main produce and goods market, housed in a covered hall. Watch butchers cut camel meat, buy dried fish, or browse fabric stalls. No entry fee, but you'll spend a few dirhams if you eat.

🕐 Daily 7am–7pm, busiest before noon

Free entry

💡 Head to the back alley for the best grilled meat sandwiches — ask for 'sandwich viande' with harissa. Costs about 50 MRU. Go early (7am–9am) for the freshest fish auction.

Small, dusty museum in a colonial-era building near the market. Displays include Tuareg jewellery, fishing tools, and photographs of old Nouadhibou. Entry is free but they appreciate a small donation.

💡 The caretaker speaks French and some English. Ask him to open the back room — that's where the arrowheads and salt-trade artefacts are kept.

Day 2

Deeper Into Nouadhibou

Morning
Plage de la Baie du Repos

A broad, sandy beach on the northern edge of the bay, popular with local families. Sheltered from the Atlantic swell, it's safe for wading. Bring your own shade.

🕐 Always accessible

💡 Go late afternoon when the wind drops and the light softens. Vendors sell grilled fish and mint tea near the car park for about 200 MRU.

Midday
Port of Nouadhibou

One of the world's largest ship graveyards, visible from the shore. Walk along the coast to see dozens of rusting vessels abandoned in the shallows. Best visited at low tide for closer views.

🕐 Open 24 hours, but best during daylight

💡 Ask a local fisherman for directions to the 'spine' of the graveyard — the highest concentration of wrecks is about 3km south of the main quay.

An operational lighthouse built by the French in 1910 on a low bluff south of the city. Sweeping views over the bay and Atlantic. Accessible via a sandy track —

💡 Arrive just before sunset. The lighthouse keeper sometimes lets you climb the stairs for a small tip. Don't approach after dark — it's a restricted area for shipping traffic.

Getting Around Nouadhibou

Regular City Taxi (shared) From €0.30 10 min

Shared taxis follow set routes and cost around 60-100 ouguiyas per person. For a private ride, say 'taxi wehd' (one taxi) and negotiate 300-500 ouguiyas.

Bush taxi / shared minibus (Bahnak) From €0.40 15 min

Flag down any white minibus with a coloured stripe. Tell the driver your destination and pay when you get off. No fixed stops — just tap the roof when you want to get out.

Airport Taxi From €10 20 min

Negotiate the fare before getting in. The standard price is 2,000-2,500 Mauritanian ouguiyas; drivers often start at double that for foreigners.

Nouadhibou–Zouérat Iron Ore Train (passenger car) From €15 720 min

This is for long-distance travel only, not local transport. If you're heading to Hotel Valencia, don't take the train — it ends up in the iron ore port, miles from town. Book a passenger compartment in advance for comfort.
