Things to Do in Nis

A cobbled pedestrian lane in the old town filled with traditional artisan workshops (coppersmiths, potters, woodcarvers). Watch craftsmen at work, browse their wares, and see the ancient coppersmithing quarter.

💡 No entrance fee – just walk through. Best time is late morning when artisans are actively working. Try the local burek from the bakery at the corner for a cheap snack.

18th-century Ottoman fortification built on Roman and Byzantine ruins. Wander the ramparts, see the Roman bathhouse remains, and walk the outer walls. The interior park is open all day.

💡 Enter through the main gate by the clock tower; walk to the far end for the best view of the Nišava River. The small lapidarium inside has free Roman stone monuments.

Remains of a Roman imperial villa complex (4th century AD) with mosaics, a bathhouse, and a granary. Exposed ruins in a fenced grassy area. Some mosaics are covered for protection but visible through glass panels.

💡 Take bus #1 from the centre to the Medijana stop; the site is sometimes locked but you can usually walk the perimeter. The mosaic panels are best seen in morning light.

A macabre 1809 tower made of human skulls, built by the Ottomans from Serbian rebels. Housed in a small chapel-like building with exhibits on the battle and the tower's history.

💡 Pay the low entry fee (around 200 RSD) to see the original skulls inside – the outside view only shows replicas. Combine with a walk along the nearby park.

A WWII execution site turned memorial park with three concrete fists symbolizing resistance. Quiet, green space with paths and interpretive plaques. A short bus ride or 40-minute walk from the centre.
