Weekend in Muang Xay
How to spend 2 days in Muang Xay — a Friday-to-Sunday plan covering the highlights without the tourist-trap detours. Built from real attraction data.
Arrive and Settle In
Friday evening is for arriving, checking in, and getting oriented. Keep it simple — a short walk to get your bearings, then dinner near the hotel.
Muang Xay Morning Market
Free 200m from centreCovered market by the main road where hill-tribe vendors sell fresh produce, sticky rice, grilled meats and handmade textiles. Real local commerce, not a tourist show.
Tip: Get there by 6.30am for the best selection of bamboo shoots and wild mushrooms. The grilled Lao sausage skewers at stall 12 are excellent — 5,000 kip each.
Wat Si Maha Phon
Free 300m from centreThe main temple compound in town, rebuilt in the 1950s after the original was destroyed. Features a large golden Buddha statue in the lotus position and a small museum of local Bud
Tip: The side building behind the main prayer hall has a modest collection of old palm-leaf manuscripts and wooden temple carvings — ask a monk to unlock the cabinet. Modest dress required.

The Main Sights
Saturday is your main sightseeing day. Start early to beat the crowds at the top attractions, then take the afternoon at a slower pace.
Nam Kat Yorla Pa Waterfall
Free Daily 7am–5pmA broad multi-tiered waterfall in a forest setting, about 7 km west of town. Best visited early for light and fewer people. The splash pool is cold but swimmable.
Tip: Take the left path past the main cascade for a quieter upper pool. Wear sandals you don't mind getting wet. No shade at the base — bring water and a hat.
Chom Ong Cave
Free Daylight hoursA massive limestone cave system 35 km north of town, with a 16 km surveyed passage. The main chamber is big enough to fly a plane through. Requires a short walk through rice paddies to reach.
Tip: Free to enter, but you need a headlamp or strong torch — phone light is useless. Ask at the village entrance for a guide (about 50,000 kip per person); they'll lead you to the best stalactite formations and past a small Buddhist shrine deep inside. Allow 2 hours round-trip. Road is rough — take a motorbike or hire a songthaew.
Oudomxay Provincial Museum
0 Mon–Fri 8am–11.30am, 1.30pm–4.A two-storey concrete building displaying Khmu and Hmong cultural objects, wartime relics and geological samples from the region. Exhibits are bilingual in Lao and English, though labels are faded.
Tip: Entry is 10,000 kip (about $0.50). The downstairs room on the left has a fascinating collection of traditional fishing traps and crossbows. Allow 45 minutes. Cash only.
