Things to Do in Mataram

A central city park with a large lotus pond, jogging track, and open grassy areas. It hosts a weekend market and performances. Good for a quiet break from the traffic.

💡 Visit on Sunday mornings when the park has a car-free morning market with local snacks. The lotus flowers bloom best in the wet season (Nov-Mar).

A free beach and park area on the west coast of Lombok. Mangrove trees line the shore, and there is a small pier and a giant coral fish statue. Locals come here to relax and fly kites in the afternoon.

💡 Walk the wooden boardwalk through the mangroves at low tide for good birdwatching. Bring your own water and snacks as stalls close after 5pm.

The largest Hindu temple in Mataram, built in 1720. It has three towering shrines dedicated to the Trimurti: Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. The courtyard is used for ceremonies and is open to visitors.

💡 Wear a sarong (available at entrance for free). Go on a major Hindu holiday like Galungan to see the temple decorated and full of activity.

An 18th-century water palace built by the Balinese kingdom. It features a large artificial pond with a floating pavilion and royal bathing pools. The grounds are peaceful and well-maintained.

💡 The park is free; the museum attached costs a small fee. Visit early to avoid crowds and heat. You can sit on the pavilion steps and watch turtles in the pond.

A massive domed mosque with striking white architecture. The complex includes a large courtyard and minarets visible from across the city. Non-Muslims can walk the grounds and view the prayer hall from designated areas.

💡 Go late afternoon when the lighting is soft for photos. Women need a headscarf and long skirt; they lend robes at the entrance.
