Things to Do in Mannar

A large Catholic cathedral built in the 19th century with an imposing white facade and simple interior. The church plays a central role in the area's Tamil Catholic community.

💡 Check if mass is on (usually mornings and Saturday evenings)—visitors are welcome, and you can observe traditional hymns sung in Tamil and Sinhala.

The long causeway connecting Mannar Island to the mainland, with a vintage railway bridge that still carries trains. The bridge's ironwork and views over the shallow sea are worth a walk.

💡 Time your visit with the daily passenger train from Colombo (around 10am–11am) for a classic photo of the train crossing the bridge over the water.

One of the oldest and largest baobab trees in Sri Lanka, said to be planted by Arab traders centuries ago. The massive trunk is a great photo spot, and locals often rest in its shade.

💡 Check if the small roadside vendor near the tree is selling fresh palmyra toddy—a local fermented drink, cheap and authentic.

A 17th-century Portuguese fort later used by the Dutch and British, with thick coral-stone walls right on the coast. You can walk along the ramparts for views over the Gulf of Mannar.

💡 Go just before sunset—the light on the ruins and Bay of Bengal is striking, and the crowds from morning tours have cleared.

A seasonal wetland and lagoon that attracts thousands of migratory birds (October to March), including flamingos, pelicans, and painted storks. Best visited early morning with binoculars.

💡 Hire a local fisherman with a small boat (around LKR 1500–2000) to paddle you into the deeper parts of the lagoon—far more birds than the roadside edges.
