Things to Do in Lappeenranta

An 18th-century star-shaped fortress on a hill above the harbour. Walk the bastions, see old cannons and the restored barracks. No entry fee for the grounds.

💡 Arrive early on summer Saturdays. The main gate can get packed with cruise ship passengers by 11am.

Small local museum in a wooden townhouse. Covers city history from Swedish rule to modern times. No charge for the permanent exhibition.

💡 Pop in on a rainy afternoon. The staff often give you a quick tour if it's quiet.

A bench-lined path along the canal locks. Watch boats being raised and lowered between Lake Saimaa and the Gulf of Finland. No cost for walking or watching.

💡 Stand near lock number 1 around noon. That's when most cargo ships pass through during peak season.

A sandy swimming beach at the tip of the fortress peninsula. Shallow water, grass lawn for sunbathing, and views across Lake Saimaa. Lifeguard on duty July only.

💡 Bring insect repellent in June and July. The midges near the reeds are fierce until the wind picks up.

A modern red-brick church from 1969 with a striking copper spire. The interior has a large fresco by artist Kimmo Kaivanto. Free entry during service or quiet hours.
