Things to Do in Labuan Bajo

The main market, selling fresh fish, spices, fruit and local snacks. The fish auction at the back happens early — you'll see tuna, snapper and lobster straight from the boats.

💡 Arrive before 7am for the auction. Try the pisang goreng (fried banana) from the stall near the entrance — it's about 5,000 IDR.

A small museum in a colonial-era building, displaying traditional textiles, weapons and a replica of the Liang Bua cave where the Homo floresiensis skeleton was found. Informative but modest.

💡 The English labels are patchy — ask the caretaker for a short tour. He's usually happy to show you the highlights. Donation suggested (around 10,000 IDR).

A paved walking path along the coast, with benches and a few warungs selling coconuts and grilled fish. Good for a relaxed sunset stroll away from the main drag.

💡 The best spot is near the stone jetty — locals gather there to chat as the sun goes down. Grab a young coconut for 10,000 IDR.

A short uphill walk from town gives you a panoramic view over the harbour and the islands beyond. The path is dusty and uneven, but the sunrise is worth the early start.

💡 Go at 5:30am to watch the fishing boats head out. Bring water and wear proper shoes — the gravel is loose.

A limestone cave with a skylight that lets in a shaft of light around midday, reflecting off the damp walls. You'll need a guide (costs about 50,000 IDR per person).

💡 Bring a head torch — the cave is pitch black in parts. The cool interior is a welcome break from the heat.
