Deeper Into La Rochelle
The old harbour is the heart of La Rochelle, lined with medieval towers and packed with fishing boats and yachts. Walk the quays and watch the comings and goings.
🕐 Open 24 hours
💡 Go at sunset for the best light on the Tour de la Lanterne and Tour Saint-Nicolas. Free to wander, but avoid the pricey tourist restaurants right on the quay.
A medieval tower originally a lighthouse, later a prison. Graffiti from 17th-century sailors covers the walls. Entry €2–4, worth it for the sea views.
🕐 Tuesday–Sunday 10:00–12:30, 14:00–17:30 (check for seasonal changes)
💡 Combine with the Tour Saint-Nicolas for a combined ticket (about €6). Climb the spiral stairs early for fewer crowds — but skip if you're claustrophobic.
Le bistrot de La Genette
Le Jardin du marché
Final Favourites & Departure

Getting Around La Rochelle
Buy a rechargeable card (€1.50) from the driver – works on trams and buses. That 10-min walk from Verdun to the hotel goes through the old town, so it's pleasant enough.
Use the Yélo app for live departures. The stop is just outside the hotel – cross the roundabout, walk 50m east. Single tickets are good for 1 hour including transfers.
After 21:00, the tram is the only reliable option back from town. From Porte de Cougnes, it's a 7-min walk west along Rue de la Grosse Horloge, then left into Rue du Minage. Save the route on Maps.
Book with Taxi La Rochelle (05 46 41 50 60) for fixed airport rates. If arriving after 9pm, confirm your driver will wait – no ranks late at night.
