Things to Do in Klungkung

The central square of Klungkung, dominated by the Taman Gili floating pavilion and a statue commemorating the 1908 puputan (mass suicide) against Dutch colonisers. Free to wander.

💡 Come late afternoon for fewer crowds and good photo light on the red roofs. Locals gather here for chats around dusk.

An ancient Hindu temple in Gelgel village, reputedly the first temple built in Bali after the arrival of Hinduism. Free to enter, but dress modestly with a sarong and sash (available to borrow for free at the entrance).

💡 Look for the moss-covered stone lingam and yoni in the inner courtyard, a rare pre-colonial survival. Donations are welcomed but not expected.

A small museum in the former palace grounds, housing Balinese weaponry, textiles, and artefacts from the Klungkung kingdom. Entry fee is nominal (5,000 IDR, about 25p).

💡 The collection is dusty but genuinely old – ask the caretaker to unlock the back room with the best surviving kris daggers.

An 18th-century pavilion once part of the Klungkung royal palace, famous for its ceiling paintings of Balinese justice scenes. Entry fee is minimal (around 7,000 IDR, or 35p).

A simple, low-cost rabbit farm and petting area popular with local families. Entry is 10,000 IDR (50p), and you can buy carrot sticks for 5,000 IDR to feed the rabbits.
