Things to Do in Kirundo

The main local market selling fresh produce, second-hand clothes, and household goods. It's crowded, noisy, and gives a real sense of daily life in Kirundo.

💡 Try the grilled maize and fresh passion fruit juice from the stalls near the entrance. Watch your pockets in the busiest aisles.

A low hill on the eastern edge of town with a clear view over Kirundo and across the plains towards Tanzania. There's a small, simple monument at the top.

🕐 Open access, any time

💡 Best at sunset when the light falls across the hills. Wear sturdy shoes—the path is steep and rocky in places. No facilities.

A protected wetland on the northern shore of Lake Rwihinda, known for birdwatching and hippo spotting. You can walk the shoreline trails and watch fishermen at work.

💡 Go early morning when birds are most active. Bring binoculars and sun protection; there's no shade on the lake edge.

The northern part of Burundi's largest national park, accessible from Kirundo side. Guided walks through savannah and riverine forest with antelope, baboons, and many birds.

💡 Entry costs around 10,000 BIF (about £3-4). Hire a guide at the park gate for 5,000 BIF extra—you'll see far more. No accommodation inside, so make it a day trip.

A small museum in a colonial-era building near the town centre. Exhibits cover local history, traditional drums, agricultural tools, and photographs from the 1950s.

💡 Entry is 2,000 BIF (about 70p). The caretaker speaks some French and English and can explain exhibits. Allow 30–40 minutes. No photography inside.
