The Main Sights

Saturday is your main sightseeing day. Start early to beat the crowds at the top attractions, then take the afternoon at a slower pace.

1

Mount Kigali Hiking Trail

Free Open 24 hours, but best before

A steep but rewarding trail through eucalyptus forest and small farms to the top of Mount Kigali. Views over the city and hills are excellent. The path is unpaved and can be muddy.

Tip: Start at the trailhead near the Nyabugogo bus station. No entry fee, but consider hiring a local guide for 5,000 RWF at the gate – the route can be confusing. Go in the morning before the heat. Wear boots.

2

Kigali Genocide Memorial

0 08:00-17:00 daily, last entry

A sobering and essential museum documenting the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi. The exhibits are clear, thorough, and moving. The gardens and mass graves add solemn reflection.

Tip: Entry is free, but you must pay for an audio guide (around 5,000 RWF) to get the full story. Go early to avoid crowds and allow at least two hours. No photography inside.

3

Nyamirambo Women's Centre Walking Tour

0 By arrangement, usually 09:00-

A guided neighbourhood walk in Kigali's oldest district led by local women. You'll see markets, homes, and a mosque, and learn about daily life. The fee supports community projects.

Tip: Costs 10,000 RWF for the tour; free entry only if you buy something from the craft shop. Wear comfortable shoes and bring water. Tours run on request – call ahead or book via their Facebook page.
