Things to Do in Katharagama

Wide stone steps leading to the sacred river. Pilgrims bathe here before visiting the temple. Clear water, big shade trees, and families washing clothes in the shallows.

🕐 Sunrise to sunset

💡 Go at 6am for the quietest swim. Bring a sarong; wet clothes in the temple aren't allowed.

Ancient brick stupa from 2nd century BCE, said to contain relics of the Buddha. Unrestored, with frayed edges and a peaceful grass field around it.

🕐 6am to 6pm

💡 Few tourists come here. You can walk clockwise round the base in 5 minutes. Best light for photos at 4pm.

A multi-faith pilgrimage site with shrines to Hindu god Skanda, Buddhist Maha Bodhi tree, and Muslim mosque. Plain white stupa and colourful Hindu gopuram dominate the courtyard.

🕐 Open 24 hours; poojas at 5am, noon, 6pm

💡 Go just before sunset during pooja time. You'll see fire-walking ceremonies on weekends.

Ancient man-made lake with a grassy dam wall. Good for a quiet evening walk. Watch flying foxes in the trees at dusk and monitor lizards sunbathing on rocks.

💡 Bring mosquito repellent. The path along the eastern edge is the least crowded. Great for a cheap picnic from the nearby kade (shop).

Dry-zone national park with elephants, sloth bears, and leopards. Join a shared jeep safari from the town access point. Entry fee 3000 LKR, shared jeep 1500 LKR per person.

💡 Don't pay for a full private jeep. Just wait at the park entrance gate and join a group tour leaving around 6am or 3pm.
