Things to Do in Katharagama UP

A flat dirt path running along the river from the sanctuary entrance downstream for about 1.5 km. You'll see monitor lizards, water birds and occasionally elephants on the far bank during dry season.

🕐 Public access, not gated – best light 6am–9am and 4pm–6pm

💡 Start at the bridge near the main road and walk south. Best in early morning when the mist lifts off the water. Mosquitoes are fierce after dusk.

A short walk east along the road towards the national park entrance leads to an elevated verge overlooking open grassland and scrub. Herds of spotted deer are often visible, and peacocks call throughout the day.

🕐 Public road, accessible 24 hours

💡 Parking is free on the roadside. Bring binoculars if you have them – elephants occasionally appear at dawn. No entrance fee because you're not inside the park boundary.

Important Buddhist stupa believed to date back to the 2nd century BC, surrounded by a peaceful precinct and offering clear views of the Menik Ganga riverbank. The main dome is whitewashed and well-maintained.

💡 Go just before sunset when the stupa glows gold and most day-trippers have left. Bring a sarong to cover your legs and shoulders.

This multi-faith pilgrimage site's outer courtyard is free to enter. You'll see Hindu kovil shrines, a Buddhist temple and Muslim mosque standing side by side. The daily puja ceremonies draw crowds of pilgrims.

💡 Don't enter the inner sanctum unless invited – the outer courtyard captures the real mix of cultures. Remove shoes at each shrine entrance. Best time is late afternoon when ceremonies begin.

Sprawling ancient temple grounds with a large seated Buddha statue, several smaller shrines, and a tranquil meditation garden. The weathered brickwork and faded murals feel genuinely old rather than over-restored.

💡 Walk the outer meditation path clockwise to see carved stone inscriptions. Donations welcome but not required. Most leave 100–200 LKR.
