Weekend in Karpenisi

A covered market in the town centre selling local cheese, honey, herbs, and handmade crafts. Good for seeing everyday life and trying free samples.

Tip: Buy a block of graviera cheese from the stall at the far end—it's made by a family farm in the village of Koryschades and costs around €6, half the price of tourist shops.

Tip: Climb the tower just before sunset—you'll get the light on the peaks without paying the €2 small fee that applies during peak summer hours (July–Aug 10:00–14:00). Otherwise it's free all year.

An artificial lake formed by a dam, surrounded by pine forest. A 2km gravel path circles the water, with benches and a few picnic tables. Quiet and good for birdwatching.

Tip: Bring binoculars—herons and kingfishers are common. The dam is easiest to reach by car; park at the dirt layby just past the bridge, not in the restricted area near the turbine building.

A working ski resort in winter, the mountain is open year-round for walking and picnicking. The views over the fir forests and down to the artificial lake are excellent.

Tip: Take the dirt track from the main car park, not the ski lifts—it's a gentle 40-minute walk to a clearing with panoramic views of Mount Timfristos. No need for ski gear outside season.

A historic monastery built into a cliff face about 20km from Karpenisi, known for its miraculous icon and frescoes. The setting is dramatic—carved from rock above a ravine.

Tip: Visit on a weekday morning to avoid crowds. The approach road has tight hairpins; drive slowly. Donations are accepted but not required. Photography inside the church is not allowed.
