Things to Do in Karpathos

A self-guided walk through the old quarter of Pigadia (Karpathos Town) up to the fragmentary walls and cisterns of a Venetian castle on the hill. No signage—just a stone path and scattered ruins with harbour views.

💡 Start at the church of Agios Georgios and follow the narrow lane uphill between whitewashed houses. The best viewpoint is behind the ruined cistern. Bring water—no shade on the ascent. Free and completely uncrowded.

A 14th-century Byzantine church in the old town of Karpathos, with faded frescoes and a wooden iconostasis. Small and quiet, often missed by visitors heading to the harbour.

💡 Knock on the wooden door of the adjacent house if it's locked—the caretaker lives there and will let you in for free. Best light for photos is late afternoon.

A compact museum in a neoclassical building near the port. Exhibits include pottery, inscriptions, and statues from the ancient cities of Karpathos and Kasos. Takes about 45 minutes.

💡 The second room has a mosaic floor from a Roman villa—don't step on the raised floorboards. Free entry is technically a 'voluntary donation' but nobody checks. Opens at 8.30am, so go early to avoid cruise-ship crowds.

A long, pebbly beach with clear turquoise water, backed by steep cliffs and a small chapel. No sunbeds or umbrellas—bring your own shade. Popular with locals for a quiet swim.

💡 Arrive before 10am to get a spot under the tamarisk trees for natural shade. The chapel is often unlocked for a quick look.

A spectacular pebble cove with bright blue water, set between two towering cliffs. Access is via a steep path down from the road. No facilities except a seasonal taverna at the top.
