Things to Do in Karlovac

A leafy, calm park next to the main square with benches, paths, and a small pond. It’s a good spot for a picnic or to rest after walking the historic core.

💡 Grab a burek from Pekara Šestan just around the corner and eat it on a bench here. The park is especially quiet on weekday mornings.

The remains of the 16th-century star-shaped fortifications that gave Karlovac its layout. You can walk along the raised promenade that traces the old bastions and moats, with interpretive panels along the way.

💡 Start near the old town’s south gate and follow the path towards the Kupa. The walk is about 1 km and takes you past three of the six original bastions.

A medieval castle and fortification complex on a hill overlooking the city. The grounds are free to walk around, with great views of the Kupa River and the surrounding green valley.

💡 The castle itself occasionally charges a few kuna for exhibitions, but the outer walls and gardens are always open. Come at sunset for the best light.

The permanent exhibition covers Karlovac’s history from Roman times through the 20th century. The entry fee is low (about €3 for adults). The courtyard and building are worth seeing even without a ticket.

💡 The museum has free admission on the first Wednesday of every month. Check with the front desk for the exact date.

A small but excellent aquarium focused on the fish of Croatia's rivers and lakes. The ticket is cheap (about €5 for adults), and you’ll see local species like trout, catfish, and pike in well-maintained tanks.

💡 Tuesday afternoons after 15:00 have a reduced entry fee of about €2.50. It’s worth the short walk or 5-minute bus ride from the centre.
