Kalutara 3-Day Itinerary

The small public ferry crosses the Kalu Ganga river, connecting the town to the south bank. A five-minute ride with views of the temple and mangroves. Cost is 20 LKR per person.

💡 Sit on the side bench for best views. Combine with a walk to the opposite side market (Wednesdays and Saturdays).

A large, hollow dagoba (stupa) you can walk inside. Unique in Sri Lanka for its internal paintings of Buddhist scenes. Built in the 1960s on a historic temple site.

💡 Donation box at entrance — give 100–200 LKR if you can. Shoes must be removed outside; watch for hot ground.

An ancient sacred fig tree on the riverbank, over 2,000 years old. One of the few Bodhi trees mentioned in historical chronicles. Locals come to pray and offer flowers.

💡 Go early morning before 8am to avoid heat and crowds. Bring a sarong to cover shoulders and knees.

A quieter stretch of beach north of the Kalutara River mouth. Grey sand, some shade from palm trees. Good for a relaxed stroll, not swimming due to strong currents.

💡 Walk north from the river mouth for 10 minutes to reach the least crowded section. Bring water and snacks; no vendors nearby.
