Things to Do in Iglesias

Iglesias's main cathedral, built in the 13th century in Catalan Gothic style. Plain sandstone facade with a rose window. Inside, a simple nave and side chapels with wooden altars. No ticket needed.

💡 Go around 10am or 4pm when the sun hits the rose window and casts coloured light on the floor. The side door on Via Matteotti is usually unlocked—quietest then.

A small 14th-century church with a very different feel—rough local volcanic stone, a squat bell tower, and inside a single nave with painted wooden ceiling. Used for concerts occasionally. Quiet and peaceful.

💡 Pop in during the afternoon siesta around 2pm—it's often empty. Look for the faded fresco of Saint Michael on the left wall, barely visible but from the 1500s.

A small mineral museum in the former Franciscan convent. Displays hundreds of local mineral samples from Sardinia's mining districts—crystals, ores, and fossils. One room covers mining history with tools and photos.

💡 Ask the attendant at the desk—they'll unlock the upper floor where a collection of fluorescent minerals glows under UV light. Takes 30 minutes.

Ruined Pisan castle on a hill overlooking the town. Just 13th-century walls and a tower remain. From the ramparts you get a 360-degree view of Iglesias and the surrounding mountains. No crowds.

💡 Wear sturdy shoes—the path up is rocky and can be slippery after rain. Go at sunset for the best light on the bell towers below. The gate is locked after 7pm.

A mining park on the former Monteponi lead and zinc mine. You can walk old railway tracks, see mine shafts, and examine crumbling industrial buildings. Flat paths, good for a stroll or bike ride.

💡 Start at the large car park near the main entrance—there's a small visitor centre with free maps. The tunnel tours cost €8, but the outdoor area is free and takes 45 minutes to explore.
