Weekend in Hyeres

A 12th-century tower that once guarded the old town. You can walk around its base and read the information panels for free. It’s one of the last remnants of the medieval walls.

Tip: Pair it with a walk along the nearby ramparts—just behind the tourist office there’s a short, free path with views over the salt flats.

A modernist villa designed by Robert Mallet-Stevens in the 1920s. Now an art and architecture centre with rotating exhibitions. The garden and parts of the ground floor are free.

Tip: The rooftop terrace is free to access and offers a great view of the old town and the peninsula. Check if the guided tour of the interior is running—it’s 6 euros and worth it.

A lively outdoor market held every Wednesday and Saturday morning. Sells local produce, cheeses, olives, flowers, and second-hand goods. Entry is free—you just pay for what you buy.

Tip: Get there by 08:30 to avoid the crowds and nab the best socca (chickpea pancake) from the stall near the fountain. Bring cash, as most vendors don’t take cards.

A large public park with exotic plants, ponds, and a small zoo with flamingos and peacocks. Plenty of shaded spots for a picnic.

Tip: Go early morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat and the school groups. The cactus garden section is surprisingly good.

A sandy beach on the Giens peninsula with calm, shallow water. It’s quiet compared to the main town beaches and has public showers. Reachable by bike or bus.

Tip: The bus line 39 from the train station drops you right at the beach for 1.50 euros. Bring a snorkel—the seagrass meadows here attract small fish.
