Things to Do in Horta (Matriz)

Small free museum inside the famous café. Collection of scrimshaw — carved whale teeth and bone — plus maritime memorabilia from the golden age of whaling.

💡 The museum is upstairs. Order a gin and tonic downstairs first, then ask for the key at the bar. It's tiny — 15 minutes is enough.

Local history museum housed in a 19th-century convent. Displays include religious art, whale hunting tools, and island artefacts. Covers Faial's volcanic and maritime heritage.

Well-kept botanical garden with endemic Azorean plants, a small lake, and walking paths. Quiet spot away from the marina crowds. Takes about 45 minutes to see properly.

💡 Bring your own picnic — there are benches near the pond. Best in spring when the hydrangeas are in bloom.

Lookout point on a hill just east of town. Panoramic view over the harbour, marina, and across to Pico island. Has a large white concrete cross and benches.

💡 Go just before sunset — the light on Pico's peak is dramatic. You can walk up in 20 minutes from the town centre, but the last 200 metres are steep.

16th-century fortress guarding the old port. Modest interior with cannon displays and harbour views. The real draw is the grassy ramparts and the calm bay below.
