Day 2

Deeper Into Freiburg

Morning
Freiburg Cathedral

A soaring Gothic cathedral built from red sandstone, with a 116-metre tower and intricate carvings. You can climb the tower for a city view but the main interior is free.

🕐 Monday to Saturday 10am–5pm, Sunday 1pm–5pm

💡 Go early in the morning before 9am to avoid crowds and the guided tour groups. The stained glass windows look best in low sun.

Midday
Freiburg Minster (Freiburger Münster)

Gothic sandstone cathedral with intricate carved spire and medieval stained glass. Climb the tower for a fee, but the nave and crypt are free.

🕐 Mon-Sat 10:00-17:00, Sun 13:00-17:00 (tower €5, closed Sun during services)

💡 Visit on a market morning (Mon-Sat) to see stalls around the base. The astronomical clock chimes at noon.

Afternoon
Bächle (City Streams)

Small open channels of water that run along many streets in the old town, originally used for firefighting and livestock. You'll hear them before you see them – constant gentle flow over stone channel

🕐 Always open; water flows April to October

💡 If you step in one accidentally, locals say you'll marry a Freiburger (or Freiburgerin). Actually useful: in summer, kids splash in them – keep an eye on your bag on café tables.

Late afternoon
Schwabentor & Tramplatz

One of the two remaining medieval city gates. You can stand under it, read the plaques, and walk through the adjacent street. The tram junction makes for good photos.

🕐 Visible at all times

💡 Head just behind the gate to the Bächle – you'll see the little water channels. The locals' trick: drop a homemade paper boat in at the Schwabentor end and chase it down to the Münster.

Getting Around Freiburg

FlixBus From 10 45 min

Tickets are cheaper online (€8-15) but buy early, as same-day fares jump. Get off at the main station, then take tram line 1 towards Littenweiler to Bertoldsbrunnen (5 mins). The hotel is a 2-minute walk from there.

Freiburg Taxi From 120 45 min

Book a fixed-price ride via Taxi Freiburg (0761 88888) to avoid surge charges. The hotel is in a pedestrian zone near the Bertoldsbrunnen tram stop, so the taxi will drop you at the nearest access point on Rotteckring.

Freiburg Tram Lines 1, 2, 3, 5 From 2.70 5 min

Buy a day ticket (€5.40) from the machine at Hbf – it covers all trams and buses for 24h. The hotel is just off Augustinerplatz, a 2-min walk from Bertoldsbrunnen. Avoid the midnight tram; it's often packed with students and very slow.

S-Bahn Basel–Freiburg (Regionalbahn) From 25 45 min

From the airport, take bus 50 to Basel SBB (15 mins, €4.20), then walk 10 mins to Basel Bad Bf. The direct RE 7 train is far cheaper than airport trains, and you avoid motorway traffic. Validate your ticket before boarding.

Freiburg Taxi (Taxi-Zentrale Freiburg) From €10 5 min

It's only a 1.5km ride, so don't bother booking. The taxi rank is right outside the station's main exit north. Cash is still preferred, but card payment works in most cabs. Uber might show €8, but the rank is faster.

EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg bus + regional train From €12 70 min

Bus 50 from airport to Basel SBB station (€4.50), then regional train to Freiburg Hbf (€7.50). From there, the hotel is a 5-minute walk southeast on Friedrichstraße. Cheapest option, just allow a few extra minutes for connections.
